Overthinking is an exhausting struggle that most of us face. We replay our choices and conversations, which can lead to more worry. This cycle is draining!

Here are some common reasons we ruminate.

Common Triggers of Rumination

  • Resentment: This trigger is a death zone and only hurts you. Make an inventory of past resentments and choose move forward. This is not easy, but is worth every grit of the teeth and will move you toward freedom.

  • Feeling Misunderstood: We all desire to be seen, understood, and heard. When you feel invisible or like nobody, "gets you," these thoughts can lead to rumination.

  • When We Are In the Wrong: This trigger is a bit different but so powerful. Rumination occurs when we know we are in the wrong yet the stubborn streak in us does not want to take responsibility. If you have wronged someone, go make it right!

Below are some helpful strategies to manage rumination.

Stop the Madness!

1. Mindfulness and Meditation

Practicing mindfulness can significantly help center your thoughts. Focusing on the present moment takes you away from an endless loop of worrying.

2. Write It Down

Journaling can be a powerful way to release your thoughts and halt rumination. When we articulate our worries on paper, the emotional weight often lessens.

  1. Shift the Focus

Engaging in activities that capture your attention and break the rumination cycle. Go for walk, cook a new meal or just put on some music and dance.

  1. See a Therapist

If ruminating thoughts significantly affect your quality of life, getting professional help may be beneficial. Therapists can provide tailored strategies to break these patterns and improve mental health.

Finding a Way Forward

Being stuck in your head is a common human experience. Understanding rumination and its impact allows you to take charge.

Take small steps. When you find yourself on the rumination train, get off and reset. You've got this!
